“3 Above all, understand this: In the last days blatant scoffers will come, being propelled by their own evil urges v4 and saying, “Where is his promised return? For ever since our ancestors died, all things have continued as they were from the beginning of creation.” v5 For they deliberately suppress this fact, that by the word of God heavens existed long ago and an earth was formed out of water and by means of water.”
One of the prolonged debates in religion and science is whether this world will come to an end or not. Some have argued that if it would come to an end, it would have happened long ago. However, we cannot suppress The Truth; as long as it is God’s Word, this world will someday come to an end.
From the days of Prophet Joel to date, The Word of God Keeps Coming to humanity that we are to prepare for the end of the world. Our ancestors have died and gone, and we may also leave this world behind when we pass on. This has influenced some of us who eagerly declared The Second Coming of Jesus Christ to lose awareness of His Coming and the end of the world.
Apostle Peter described the false preachers who deny His coming as Blatant Scoffers. Two things characterize such people. Firstly, they bravely mock at The Word of God and secondly, they think of food and material gains over the Eternal salvation of their souls. In their folly, they deceive people to ‘enjoy’ life; after all, there is no hope after death.
These false preachers were trying to deceive Christians in the early church by asking, “Where is Jesus? He promised to return, but it’s been too long. If He were really coming back to judge the world, He would have been here by now.”
This claim is both thoughtless and incomplete. It also leads to a very wrong conclusion: that God Does Not Intervene in the physical world. It assumes that He Always Lets the world run along without interference. The view of the mockers and false teachers is also contradicted by history.
The Heavens Came into Being by God’s Word, Peter writes. That same powerful Word is what the false teachers now mock when they dismiss The Return of Christ. False teachers suggest that the consistency of the physical world is evidence of God’s unwillingness to Act, which is simply foolish. God Will Do as He Wills with His Creation.
Over the years, the urgency with which preachers preached The Second Coming of Jesus Christ Has reduced drastically. Some preachers have even forgotten about the existence of ‘Altar Call’; they don’t even remember the last time they made one. For many of us, our motivation for being in The Body of Christ is so we ‘use’ God to meet our personal desires on earth.
Precious one of what use is it if you have it all on earth and end up roasting in the eternal pit of hell? No matter how hard we try to suppress The Truth, Truth is Truth. This world will come to an end someday, hopefully sooner than later. “Therefore, stay alert, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.” (Matthew 24:42). Don’t be deceived; prepare for His coming.
Heavenly Father,
Please help me to stay alert and be always prepared for The Second Coming of my Lord Jesus Christ. May I never be lured by the busyness of today’s world that I will neglect The Eternal Hope I have held on to. Help us LORD,
in Jesus’ Name, Amen.
