THE GOOD SHEPHERD

Psalm 23:1-2 – “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.” (ESV)

One of the most familiar and loved chapters in all of Scripture is Psalm 23).

King David, the author of this psalm, wasn’t lacking in power or prestige. And yet, before silencing Goliath, being anointed as Israel’s king, and leading troops to victory in the trenches of war, David was a lowly shepherd boy. Turns out, he knew a lot about sheep.

David understood that sheep need a shepherd to survive. Without guidance and protection, sheep are prone to wandering off, following each other off cliffs, being washed away by strong currents, or becoming a predator’s next meal. 1 Samuel tells us that David fought off lions and bears to protect the livestock that had been entrusted to him.

Comparing himself to a sheep, David explains that his needs are fully satisfied in God. He lacks nothing—he is filled with contentment and peace—because God provides for and protects him.

However, under the New Covenant of Grace, Psalm 23:1–2 takes on an even deeper, Christ-Centered meaning. Jesus, as the Good Shepherd (John 10:11)

“THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD”: Jesus is your personal shepherd who guides, protects, and provides: not based on your performance, but through His grace. He laid down His life for you and now lives to intercede for you. Jesus Himself said  ths:

John 10:11 – “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.”

This means you are never alone. In every season, through trials, sickness, or uncertainty – Christ walks with you.

“I SHALL NOT WANT”: In Christ, you lack nothing that God knows you need. This is not about worldly riches, but a deep, grace-based contentment and provision for your spirit, soul, and body.

Philippians 4:19 – “And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”

God’s provision is not earned, it is received through faith in Jesus.

“HE MAKES ME TO LIE DOWN IN GREEN PASTURES”: God calls you to rest in His finished work. “Green pastures” symbolize spiritual nourishment and peace, not striving. You are invited to rest because Jesus has already completed the work of salvation. – This is the rest of grace, not the labor of law.

Hebrews 4:10 – “For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His.”

“HE LEADS ME BESIDE THE STILL WATERS”: The Holy Spirit gently leads believers into peace, renewal, and clarity. You are not driven by fear or guilt but led by grace.

John 14:27 – “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you…”

God’s grace calms the soul and guides the heart.

In John 10:11, Jesus makes a strong declaration, saying, “I am the good shepherd.” He describes how His sheep know His voice, and that He has one flock from many folds.

Jesus not only leads and guides His people, but He also loves and laid down His life for His people.

You can choose to brave this world alone, boasting of your independence and self-sufficiency. History proves that kind of strategy never ends well. But you also have another choice: you can humble yourself under the authority, protection, and sovereignty of the Good Shepherd who always has your best in mind.

Psalm 23:1–2 under the New Covenant of Grace means that:

Jesus is your Shepherd, always present and guiding.

You will not lack; He provides by grace.

You can rest in His finished work.

You are led by peace, not by fear or law. Amen.
