FIXING OUR EYES ON JESUS

Hebrews 12:2 – “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God”.

Psalm 121:1-2 – “I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.”

Further Refs. Matthew 14:30, Jeremiah 33:3

Life is filled with unpredictable twists and turns, often leaving us feeling bewildered and uncertain. Just when everything seems to be going smoothly, we may suddenly find ourselves facing unexpected challenges that shake us to the core. Yet, in the midst of these turbulent times, we are reminded of the unchanging faithfulness of our God.

Consider the story of Peter walking on water towards Jesus in Matthew 14:30. At first, Peter steps out in faith, defying the laws of nature as he walks on the stormy sea. Yet, when he takes his eyes off Jesus and focuses on the wind and waves, fear grips his heart, and he begins to sink.

Imagine a devoted entrepreneur who has poured years of hard work and dedication into building a successful business, only to be blindsided by a sudden economic downturn. Overnight, sales plummet, clients disappear, and the future of the business hangs in the balance. Despite the overwhelming circumstances, this entrepreneur, fixes their eyes on Jesus, trusting in His provision and guidance.

Or consider the heartache of parents who have watched their child excel academically, only to see them lose interest and motivation seemingly overnight. As their child struggles with doubt and uncertainty about their future, these parents cling to the promise of Jeremiah 33:3, calling upon the Lord for wisdom and direction in this challenging season.

In our own lives, we may face similar trials and tribulations – financial struggles, relational tensions, health issues, or career setbacks. In these moments of despair, it’s easy to allow fear and anxiety to consume us. Yet, the psalmist reminds us to lift our eyes to the hills, acknowledging that our help comes from the Lord, the Creator of heaven and earth.

Looking unto Jesus in the midst of adversity is not a passive act but an intentional choice to place our trust in His unfailing love and sovereignty.  Remember that even in the darkest of valleys, He is with us, guiding us, and sustaining us.

Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, and call upon Him with confidence, knowing that He hears our prayers and will never leave us nor forsake us.
Amen.
