LOVING OTHERS WELL

John 13:34     – “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another”

What does love truly mean?

For many people, love is a confusing concept. Our understanding of it is often shaped by imperfect experiences: relationships that fell short, unmet expectations, or moments when love felt conditional or fragile. When we haven’t consistently experienced genuine love, it can be difficult to recognise it, let alone extend it to others.

Yet Jesus gives us a clear and beautiful picture of what love really looks like.

Throughout His life and ministry, Jesus spoke often about love. But He did more than talk about it: He lived it. Every interaction, every act of compassion, and every sacrifice revealed the heart of God. When Jesus told His followers to love one another, He was not merely offering a suggestion; He was inviting them into a new way of living.

In John 13:34, Jesus gives a powerful instruction: to love one another as He has loved us.

These standard changes everything. Human love often has limits. We love when it’s convenient, when it feels deserved, or when it is returned. But Jesus introduces a different kind of love; one that is self-giving, patient, and unwavering.

He does not ask us to love only when it is easy. He does not ask us to love only when we feel strong enough. Instead, He calls us to reflect the same love He has shown us.

The love of Jesus is unconditional. He holds nothing back. He entered our broken world, walked among us with compassion, and ultimately gave His life so we could experience the fullness of God’s love. His sacrifice was not motivated by pressure from people but by His deep relationship with the Father and His profound love for humanity.

The cross stands as the ultimate expression of that love: selfless, generous, and complete.

Because of this, the measure of our love is not found by comparing ourselves with others. It is found in looking at Jesus. He is the example we follow and the source from which our love flows.

When we stay connected to His heart, we begin to love differently. Our patience grows. Our compassion deepens. We become more willing to forgive, to serve, and to care for people in meaningful ways.

Loving others well is not about grand gestures alone. Often, it appears in simple, everyday moments: offering encouragement, listening when someone needs to talk, helping when no one else notices, or choosing kindness when frustration would be easier.

Rather than feeling discouraged by what we may have missed, we can see each day as a fresh opportunity. Ask God to shape your heart with His love. As you spend time in prayer, allow Him to show you practical ways to care for the people in your life.

Then take a simple step: reach out, encourage someone, offer help, or extend grace. When we love others the way Jesus loves us, we become living reflections of His heart in a world that deeply needs it.
Amen.
