Matthew 6: 11 – “Give us this day our daily bread”.
Under the New Covenant of Grace, this verse is far more than just a request for food. It is a daily expression of dependence on God—not through striving or performance, but through trust in His provision by grace.
1.In grace, we’re reminded that everything we receive—from physical food to spiritual strength—is not earned but freely supplied by God’s love. “Daily bread” under grace means:
God provides for both physical needs (food, shelter, health) and spiritual nourishment (wisdom, peace, guidance).
We don’t live by human effort alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God
(see Matthew 4:4).
We would feed on Christ daily—His presence, His promises, His finished work.
Our hearts would be sustained not just by what we eat, but by who we believe in.
3.This verse models trust in God for today, not worry about tomorrow. Grace teaches us to live one day at a time, confident in God’s faithfulness:
“Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself…”
(Matthew 6:34)
Remember to rely on God for our daily sustenance and to be thankful for His provision. pray in dependence on the Father; to ask Him to meet the needs of each day. we should ask God for our daily needs, specifically, the necessities of life, like food, and trust that He will provide.
Take a moment to think about God’s provision in your life. Maybe He answered a prayer, kept a promise from His Word, or provided for you in a time of need.
In the passage in the Bible known as the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus teaches His disciples how to pray.
Part of the way through, Jesus says, “Give us today our daily bread.” He is referencing a time when God’s people wandered in the desert for 40 years before they could enter the Promised Land.
During that waiting period, in a time of despair and hopelessness, God cared for His people by sending manna, a type of bread, every day to sustain them.
In the same way the Israelites depended on God for food, Jesus is setting an example for how we should talk to God: with humility and complete dependence on Him and His Word.
God’s Word is the ultimate thing that sustains us, giving us strength for today, hope for tomorrow, and vision for the future.
When we depend on God and seek Him through His Word, God draws near, exceeding our expectations and doing infinitely more than we could imagine through our circumstances.
God’s Word is reaching people all over the world, from all nations and languages. And you’re one of them.
Today, spend time reading God’s Word and reflecting on God’s goodness and provision. Ask Him for guidance, surrender to Him, and trust that He will provide and sustain you.
Matthew 6:11, under grace, is a confident, relational prayer. It acknowledges God as our faithful Father, who lovingly supplies all we need each day, both physically and spiritually, through the finished work of Jesus Christ. ‘You don’t beg for you receive it freely from the hand of your Father’. Amen.
