THE ROAD TO SCRIPTURE

Acts 8:35 “Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus”

Every time we open the Bible, we’re not just reading words; we’re holding a treasure.

Across generations, cultures, and centuries, Scripture has shaped lives and transformed hearts. It carries the story of God’s love unfolding through time, reaching into ordinary moments and drawing people into something eternal. And today, that same treasure rests in our hands, accessible, powerful, and alive.

Yet, for many of us, the richness of Scripture can feel overwhelming. There are passages we don’t fully understand, contexts we struggle to grasp, and moments when the meaning seems just out of reach. It’s easy to wonder: Am I really getting this?

You’re not alone in that question.

In Acts 8, we meet a man from Ethiopia (an influential official) who was reading the book of Isaiah. Though sincere in his pursuit, he found himself confused by what he was reading. The words were there, but the meaning wasn’t clear.

At just the right moment, God sent Philip.

“Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus.”

Philip didn’t overwhelm him with complexity. Instead, he started exactly where the man was and gently revealed the bigger picture that the passage pointed to Jesus. What once felt distant and unclear suddenly became personal and life-changing. In that moment, Scripture came alive, and the man encountered not just understanding but transformation.

This story reminds us of something deeply encouraging:

An invitation to discover that the entire Bible, in its beauty and depth, tells one unified story: a story of redemption centered on Jesus. From beginning to end, it reveals a God who is not distant, but present; not silent but speaking; not indifferent, but deeply loving.

And just as God met that Ethiopian official in his searching, He meets us too.

When we come to Scripture with open hearts, something powerful happens. Understanding grows. Clarity emerges. But more than that: we encounter Jesus Himself. Not as a distant figure in history, but as a living Saviour who speaks into our lives today.

We also see that we were never meant to walk this journey alone. God often places people around us: teachers, friends, mentors, who help illuminate truth when we feel stuck. Just as Philip was sent at the perfect time, guidance often comes when we need it most.

Ask: What does this reveal about Jesus? What does it show me about God’s character? How can this shape the way I live today?

Scripture is more than information, it’s a transformation. The Ethiopian man went on his way rejoicing after his encounter with the truth. And that same joy is available to us. When we begin to see the depth of God’s love and the beauty of His story, how can we not respond with joy? The road to Scripture is not about having all the answers. It’s about discovering the One who is the answer.
Amen.
