Matthew 6:19 – “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.”
Every human grows up in a world filled with desires and needs. From the moment we open our eyes to life, we’re surrounded by the pursuit of more: more comfort, more success, more things. It’s almost instinctive. We learn to reach for what feels good and avoid what brings discomfort. And in a world where material wealth often measures worth, it’s easy to believe that happiness lies in what we possess. We discover that it is easier to have plenty than it is to have little.
There’s no denying that material things can bring convenience, shiny new cars, spacious homes, and the latest gadgets. It’s easy to think that having more will make you happier, too. But here’s the sobering truth: nothing we can buy will last forever.
Cars break down. Houses grow old. Phones that seemed so advanced become outdated within months. Even the things we cherish most in this life are vulnerable to decay, theft, or loss. In the end, our control over worldly possessions is fleeting at best.
But Jesus offers us a better perspective – a heavenly one.
He calls us to store up treasures in heaven, where rust doesn’t corrode, moths don’t destroy, and no thief can break in and steal. These treasures aren’t made of metal or marble. They’re eternal. They’re spiritual. They’re found in acts of love, faith, kindness, and obedience—investments that echo into eternity.
Everything we have – our resources, talents, time – was given to us by God’s grace, not for hoarding but for sharing. When we begin to see our possessions not as ours but as tools entrusted to us by God, our grip on them loosens. Instead of accumulating wealth for ourselves, we begin to ask: How can I use what I have to bless others? To make an eternal impact?
Sharing the love and hope of Jesus, giving to someone in need, supporting a ministry, or simply being generous with your time—these are the kinds of treasures that last forever.
So, what might you do today to realign your heart from the temporary to the eternal?
