HE WILL LEAD THE WAY

Deuteronomy 31:8 “And the LORD, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed”.

There are moments in life when everything changes at once.

A familiar voice grows quiet. A trusted leader steps aside. A season ends. And suddenly, we find ourselves standing at the edge of something new: exciting, yes, but also uncertain.

That is where Joshua stood.

For forty years, Moses had led Israel. He had walked them out of slavery in Egypt, stood before impossible waters at the Red Sea, and encountered God on Mount Sinai. Through deserts and doubts, victories and failures, Moses had been the visible shepherd of a nation.

But now the journey was shifting.

The people were standing at the edge of Canaan: the promise within reach. And Moses would not be the one to take them in.

Leadership would pass to Joshua.

Imagine the weight of that moment. Joshua had walked beside Moses, watched him, and learned from him. But walking beside a leader and becoming the leader are two very different things. The mantle is heavier when it rests on your own shoulders.

And in that defining moment, Moses didn’t give Joshua a leadership manual.

He didn’t hand him strategies.

He didn’t outline contingency plans.

Instead, he gave him a perspective.

“The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”
Deuteronomy 31:8

A SHIFT IN FOCUS

Notice what Moses did. He redirected Joshua’s attention away from himself and onto God.

Moses had been central in Israel’s story, but he was never the source. Every miracle, every provision, every step forward had been because God was already there.

The message was simple but profound:

The One who brought you this far is the One who will take you further.

Joshua was not stepping into an uncertain future alone. God was not reacting to the transition. He wasn’t scrambling to adjust His plans because Moses was leaving the scene. He was already ahead.

“The LORD himself goes before you.”

Before Joshua faced fortified cities, God was already there.

Before he encountered resistance, God was already there.

Before he felt fear rise in his chest, God was already there.

And the same is true for you.

WHEN SEASONS CHANGE

Life rarely warns us before it shifts.

A job ends.

A new responsibility begins.

A relationship changes.

A door closes, and another opens.

In those moments, we often focus on what we’ve lost: the mentor, the certainty, the familiarity. But Moses’ words teach us to focus on something greater: God’s unchanging presence.

It is comforting to have strong leaders. It is stabilising to have familiar systems. But ultimately, our confidence was never meant to rest in people or structures. It rests in the One who goes before us.

When God leads the way, the unknown is no longer a threat: it becomes an unfolding story.

COURAGE IS ROOTED IN PRESENCE

“Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”

Those words were not a demand for emotional suppression. They were an invitation to trust.

Fear often comes from imagining ourselves alone in what lies ahead. Discouragement grows when we believe the outcome depends entirely on us. But Moses dismantled both fears with one truth: God’s presence is constant.

Joshua’s strength would not come from personality.

It would not come from experience.

It would not come from perfect planning.

It would come from knowing that God had already gone ahead.

Courage, then, is not the absence of trembling. It is the quiet confidence that the path has been prepared.

GOD IS THE TRUE LEADER

Moses understood something deeply important: he was never the hero of the story.

God was.

Leaders change. Seasons shift. Roles evolve. But the Author remains the same. The One who parted seas and sustained people in the wilderness still directs every step forward.

That means your progress has never depended solely on you.

The opportunities ahead of you are not accidents. The doors that open are not random. The calling you sense is not a self-generated ambition. If God is leading, He is also sustaining.

Joshua didn’t need to recreate Moses’ leadership style. He needed to trust God’s leadership.

And you don’t need to replicate someone else’s path. You need to follow the One who goes before you.

STANDING AT YOUR OWN EDGE

Perhaps you are standing at your own version of Canaan today.

Maybe it’s a new assignment that feels larger than your capacity.

Maybe it’s a transition you didn’t ask for.

Maybe it’s the responsibility that feels overwhelming.

ear the ancient promise afresh:

He goes before you.

He will be with you.

He will never leave you.

He will never forsake you.

That means the terrain ahead has already been walked by Him. The obstacles that look immovable are not a surprise to Him. The questions that keep you awake at night do not intimidate Him.

You are not being asked to generate your own strength. You are being invited to trust His presence.

MOVING FORWARD WITH CONFIDENCE

Joshua would go on to lead with boldness. Battles would come. Decisions would test him. But the foundation of his courage was laid in that simple promise: God goes first.

And that promise still speaks.

When you step into the meeting, He goes before you.

When you begin the new venture, He goes before you.

When you face uncertainty about tomorrow, He is already there.

You may not know every detail of what lies ahead—but you know Who does.

And that is enough.

So, take the step. Embrace the season. Move forward with confidence. He will lead the way.
Amen.
