OUR DAILY BREAD

Matthew 6:11  Give us this day our daily bread.

In the rhythm of everyday life, it’s easy to focus on what’s ahead: tomorrow’s plans, next week’s needs, or long-term security. Yet in Matthew 6, when Jesus teaches His disciples how to pray, He centers their attention on something beautifully simple:

“Give us today our daily bread.”

This short line carries profound meaning. It reminds us that God is not distant or uninterested in the details of our lives. He invites us to bring everything to Him: not just life’s major decisions, but even the ordinary, daily needs we often overlook. Nothing is too small for His attention, because His care for us is both personal and constant.

At its heart, this prayer acknowledges God as our true provider. While we may work hard and feel responsible for meeting our needs, the deeper truth is that everything we have ultimately comes from Him. The strength to work, the opportunities we receive, and even the resources themselves are all gifts sustained by His hand. Recognising this shifts our perspective from self-reliance to gratitude.

Jesus also teaches us something striking about trust. He doesn’t instruct us to pray for an abundance stored up for the future, but for provision “today.” This daily dependence draws us into a closer relationship with God. It invites us to trust Him not just once, but continually: day after day.

Life can change in a moment. What feels secure today may not be there tomorrow. But when our confidence rests in God rather than in what we possess, we discover a deeper peace. We begin to live not by fear of lack, but by faith in His faithful provision.

Gratitude becomes a natural response. Instead of rushing through our days, we start to notice the quiet ways God provides: strength for the moment, grace for challenges, and provision for our needs. Each day becomes an opportunity to thank Him, to trust Him, and to walk closely with Him.

Today, take a moment to pause. Reflect on what God has already provided. Thank Him for His faithfulness in meeting your needs and bring before Him whatever you require today. As you do, allow your heart to rest in the assurance that you are seen, cared for, and sustained by a loving God who provides, one day at a time.
Amen.
