YOU CANNOT SUPPRESS THE TRUTH

Scripture: 2 Peter 3:3–5 “Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts…And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation…For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water”

History has always carried a quiet tension between what people want to believe and what is actually true. In every generation, voices arise that question the future and dismiss the idea that this world will one day come to an end. Many assume that because life has continued for centuries without interruption, it will simply continue forever.

Yet Saint Peter (the Apostle) addressed this mindset long ago. In his letter, he warned that in the last days there would be scoffers: people who openly mock the promise of Christ’s return. Their reasoning would appear simple: “Everything has continued as it always has. Where is this promised return?” Because time passes and nothing seems to change, they conclude that the promise itself must be empty.

But Peter revealed something deeper. He explained that this disbelief is not merely intellectual doubt; it is often a deliberate suppression of truth. People ignore the evidence of God’s power and the testimony of His word because acknowledging it would require them to reconsider how they live.

From the earliest days of faith, believers have been reminded that history is moving toward a divine conclusion. The prophets spoke about it. Jesus Himself spoke about it. The early church lived with the awareness that the story of this world is not endless: it is purposeful and moving toward fulfilment.

Yet over time, familiarity can dull our awareness. As generations pass and daily life becomes busy, it is easy to drift into the assumption that things will always remain as they are. Even sincere believers can gradually lose their sense of expectancy. Conversations about the return of Christ become rare. Messages about eternal hope are sometimes replaced with messages focused only on temporary success and comfort.

But the truth has not changed.

The passage reminds us that scoffing often grows out of misplaced priorities. When people become consumed with immediate pleasures, ambitions, and material pursuits, the idea of eternity feels inconvenient. If there is nothing beyond this life, then enjoying the present moment becomes the highest goal. But if eternity is real, then our choices today carry lasting significance.

Suppressing truth may quiet our conscience for a moment, but it cannot change reality. Truth remains true whether we acknowledge it or not.

The promise of Christ’s return is not meant to create fear but to awaken hope and purpose. It reminds us that history is not random and that our lives are part of a much larger story written by God. It invites us to live with spiritual awareness, keeping our hearts anchored in what truly lasts.

The message of the gospel has always called people to respond: to turn their hearts toward Christ and embrace the life He offers. That invitation is as relevant today as it was when the apostles first proclaimed it.

In a world filled with noise, distractions, and endless pursuits, believers are called to remain spiritually alert. Our confidence is not rooted in speculation but in the faithfulness of God. His promises stand firm across generations.

No matter how loudly scepticism speaks, truth cannot be silenced. The passing of time does not erase it. Cultural trends cannot redefine it. And human doubt cannot cancel it.

One day, Christ will return. Until then, the wisest way to live is with open hearts, steady faith, and a constant awareness that eternity matters. Let us therefore live thoughtfully, love deeply, and remain watchful, holding firmly to the hope that has been entrusted to us.
Amen.
