Proverbs 4:23 “Keep (Guard) thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life”
MAKING WISE MEDIA CHOICES:
We live in a world where media surrounds us every moment of the day. Television, social media, streaming platforms, music, podcasts, video games, news, and countless online distractions compete for our attention. Many people spend several hours each day consuming digital content, often without realising how deeply it shapes their thoughts, attitudes, emotions, and values.
The truth is that what we consistently allow into our minds eventually influences the way we think, speak, and live. Every image we watch, every message we hear, and every story we absorb leaves an impression on our hearts. Whether we notice it or not, our daily media choices are quietly forming our character.
As followers of Christ, we are called to be intentional about what fills our hearts and minds. This is not about withdrawing from the world or living in fear of culture. Rather, it is about developing the wisdom to discern what strengthens our faith and what slowly weakens it.
Much of today’s media promotes values that conflict with God’s heart: selfish ambition, greed, immorality, unforgiveness, pride, violence, and hopelessness. When these messages become our daily diet, they can gradually dull our spiritual sensitivity. What once troubled our conscience can begin to seem normal, and what God calls life-giving may lose its appeal.
On the other hand, when we intentionally fill our hearts with God’s truth, our perspective changes. Scripture renews our minds. Worship lifts our hearts. Christ-centred teaching strengthens our faith. Encouraging conversations inspire hope. These influences help us recognise God’s voice above the constant noise of the world.
The question is not simply, “Is this entertainment wrong?” A better question is, “Is this drawing me closer to Christ?” Every movie, song, post, or conversation has the potential either to nourish our faith or distract us from God’s purposes. Wise believers learn to evaluate their choices through the lens of their relationship with Jesus.
This also means being mindful of how much time we spend consuming media. Hours can disappear while scrolling through endless feeds or binge-watching programs, leaving little room for prayer, Bible reading, meaningful relationships, or quiet moments with God. Time is one of God’s precious gifts, and how we invest it reflects what we truly value.
Choosing wisely does not mean living under rules or guilt. It means recognising that God desires the very best for His children. He invites us to experience peace instead of anxiety, truth instead of deception, and lasting joy instead of temporary distraction. As we make intentional choices about what we watch, listen to, and read, we create space for the Holy Spirit to shape our hearts and deepen our relationship with Christ.
Every day presents an opportunity to choose what we will feed our minds. When we consistently choose what is true, pure, noble, and life-giving, our faith becomes stronger, our discernment becomes sharper, and our lives increasingly reflect the character of Jesus.
May we become people who guard our hearts with wisdom, steward our time with purpose, and allow God’s truth to be the loudest voice influencing our lives. As we do so, we will not only grow spiritually but also become a light that points others to the hope, peace, and transforming love found in Christ.
Amen.
