BE PREPARED: Living Ready in an Unpredictable World.

Matthew 24:44 “So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him” (NIV):

There’s something deeply unsettling about the unexpected. We can plan our days, set our goals, and map out our futures, but there are moments in life that arrive without warning, interrupting everything we thought we controlled. Scripture paints a vivid picture of such a moment: a day that will come quietly, suddenly, and undeniably: the Day of the Lord.

It is described as a thief arriving in the night. Not with an announcement, not with a warning siren, but with a quiet unpredictability that catches many off guard. Life may seem calm, secure, even prosperous: people declaring “peace and safety”, and yet, in a moment, everything shifts. This isn’t meant to instil fear, but to awaken awareness. It’s a call to live consciously, intentionally, and spiritually alert.

Another image is equally striking: the moment of childbirth. Though a pregnancy follows a general timeline, no one can pinpoint the exact hour labour begins. And when it does, it demands full attention; nothing else matters. In the same way, that final day will command complete focus and reality. It will not be postponed, ignored, or negotiated.

SO WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE PREPARED?

Preparation isn’t about anxiety or living in dread. It’s about alignment. It’s about living each day with purpose, knowing that our lives carry eternal significance. Whether that day comes in our lifetime or not, one truth remains unavoidable: our time on earth is limited. Each person will eventually face that moment of transition, stepping from time into eternity.

This shifts the question from “When will it happen?” to “Am I ready?

Being ready is not about perfection; it’s about direction. It’s about embracing a life shaped by faith, guided by love, and grounded in truth. It’s choosing to live in a way that reflects what truly matters: compassion over indifference, integrity over convenience, humility over pride.

Too often, it’s easy to drift into routine, assuming there will always be more time: to grow, to change, to make things right. But readiness calls us to live now with intention. It invites us to examine our hearts honestly, to realign where needed, and to deepen our relationship with God daily.

There’s also a hopeful urgency in this message. The return of Christ is not merely about judgment: it is also about fulfilment, restoration, and the completion of a promise. For those who are ready, it is not a day to fear, but a day to anticipate with confidence and peace.

So take a moment. Pause and reflect, not out of pressure, but out of sincerity. Look at your life, your choices, your priorities. Are they aligned with the life you are called to live? Are you investing in what truly lasts?

Preparation is not a one-time act; it is a daily posture. Live ready. Walk faithfully. Love deeply. And let each day be shaped by the quiet confidence that, whenever that moment comes, you will not be caught off guard but found prepared.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank You for the reminder that life is more than what we see. Help me to live with awareness, purpose, and faith. Shape my heart so that I am ready at all times, walking in truth and reflecting Your love. Strengthen me to live each day with eternity in view. Amen.
