GOD IS NEAR

Psalm 145:18 – “The Lord is near to all who call on Him, to all who call on Him in truth.”

Life has a way of making us feel distant from others, from ourselves, and sometimes even from God. We can be surrounded by people, yet quietly battling fears, doubts, or loneliness that no one else sees. But Psalm 145:18 gives us a powerful assurance: God is nearby. Not just when we feel strong or spiritual, but right in the middle of our weakness, confusion, and pain.

We often think we must “fix ourselves” before approaching God, as though He only wants the polished, prayerful, and put-together version of us. But that’s not the heart of God. The truth is, He invites us to come as we are; tired, uncertain, anxious, and flawed, and to simply call on Him.

CALLING ON GOD IN TRUTH

The psalmist says that God draws near to those who call on Him in truth. That phrase might sound intimidating, but it’s deeply freeing. To “call on Him in truth” doesn’t mean using perfect words or following a formula; it means being real with God. It means speaking from a place of honesty rather than performance.

Calling on God in truth begins with recognizing our own limitations. We don’t approach Him because we’ve earned the right to; we approach Him because He is good, kind, and merciful. True prayer happens when we let go of the act and open our hearts fully: when we stop pretending and start trusting.

You might say, “But I don’t even know what to pray.” That’s okay. God is not moved by eloquence; He’s moved by sincerity. Sometimes, a few quiet words like “Help me” or “Be near” carry more power than a thousand polished prayers.

THE BEAUTY OF HONEST PRAYER

Praying truthfully means admitting our brokenness (not with shame), but with trust that God already knows and still loves us deeply. He’s not shocked by our doubts or frustrated by our fears. He doesn’t turn away from our weakness; He meets us in it.

You don’t need to have your life together before approaching God. You don’t need to be free from anxiety, depression, or fear. God’s nearness isn’t reserved for those who “get it right.” He is close to the weary, the wandering, and the wounded. The Bible is full of people who found God not on mountaintops, but in valleys—people who learned that even in the darkest moments, the light of His presence never fades.

So, wherever you are (whether in a season of joy or pain) know this: God is listening. Every sigh, every tear, every whisper of your heart reaches His ears. He’s not waiting for you to impress Him; He’s waiting for you to trust Him.

THE UNSEEN PRESENCE OF GOD

There are days when we can sense God’s nearness so vividly that our hearts overflow with peace. But there are also days when it feels like He’s a million miles away. Those moments can be confusing, but they don’t mean He has left you. God’s presence is not dependent on our emotions.

Like the sun hidden behind clouds, He remains constant even when unseen. Our feelings may fluctuate, but His faithfulness never does. Even in silence, God is working. Even in waiting, He is near. The promise of Psalm 145:18 doesn’t rest on how we feel—it rests on who He is.

When you whisper a prayer in the dark, when you lift your eyes in exhaustion, when you simply breathe His name—He draws near. His presence surrounds you even when your heart can’t sense it.

DRAWING NEAR TO GOD

When we come to God honestly, something changes within us. We begin to see that His nearness isn’t just a promise, it’s an invitation. He invites us to live aware of His presence in every moment. Through prayer, worship, or simple stillness, we can cultivate an ongoing conversation with the One who never leaves us.

Drawing near to God is less about effort and more about openness. It’s the quiet posture of the heart that says, “Lord, I need You.” And as we take one step toward Him, we find He’s already been walking beside us all along. No matter what you’re facing: uncertainty, heartbreak, loneliness, or fear—remember this: You are not alone. The God who created the stars is as close as your next breath. Take a deep breath. Still your heart. And call on God—not perfectly, but truthfully. You’ll find that He’s closer than you ever imagined.
Amen.

SIX KEY TAKEAWAY POINTS

God’s nearness is not based on feelings but on His faithfulness: Even when we can’t sense Him, He is with us—steady, present, and unchanging.

Calling on God in truth means being honest, not perfect: True prayer flows from authenticity, not eloquence or performance.

God draws near because of who He is, not because of who we are: His mercy, kindness, and humility invite us into relationship despite our flaws.

Brokenness is not a barrier to God, it’s often where we meet Him most deeply: He is close to the weary, the anxious, and those who cry out from the heart.

God’s silence does not mean His absence: Even when He seems hidden, He is working behind the scenes with perfect love.

To draw near to God is to rest in His presence, not strive for His approval: When we simply come as we are, we find that He’s already near.
