WHY THE CHURCH IS GOOD FOR YOU

Psalm 84:10 – “Better is one day in Your courts than a thousand elsewhere.”

There is something deeply human about longing for a place where we belong—a place where our souls breathe, our hearts rest, and our faith grows. Psalm 84:10 captures this perfectly: “Better is one day in Your courts than a thousand elsewhere.” It is the cry of someone who has tasted the presence of God and discovered that nothing else compares.

Even Jesus valued gathering with God’s people. Scripture tells us, “He went as usual to the synagogue”. it was part of His rhythm of life. The apostles did the same, meeting regularly, worshipping together, and strengthening each other. From the earliest days of faith, God’s people have understood one thing clearly: we were never created to walk this journey alone.

WHY WE NEED GOD’S HOUSE

Church is not just a building; it is a community: a living, breathing place of encouragement, healing, and transformation. It is where God meets us in ways we rarely experience in isolation. In church, our hearts are stirred, our perspectives are realigned, and our weary souls receive fresh strength.

When you step into God’s house, you step into an atmosphere designed to lift you. You hear the Word explained with clarity. You find wisdom for everyday life. You begin to recognise and develop the spiritual gifts God placed within you. And perhaps most importantly, you form relationships that become anchors during life’s storms. Where else do we find all of that in one place?

Church becomes a spiritual home: a place where you grow, heal, and belong. Even David, a king with access to every luxury, longed for God’s house more than anything else. He knew that nothing in this world could outweigh the peace, joy, and strength found in God’s presence among God’s people.

CHURCH AND YOUR WELL-BEING

Interestingly, research keeps catching up with what Scripture has taught for centuries. A study from Yale University found that people who attend church regularly are generally happier, healthier, and live longer than those who don’t. Their findings were remarkable:

Lower blood pressure

Less stress

Stronger immune systems

A significantly longer life expectancy

In fact, the study noted that people who never go to church have a shortened lifespan comparable to that of lifelong cigarette smokers. And no sermon caused that stat; life simply works better when our souls are nourished and our hearts grounded in community.

One interviewer asked an 80-year-old woman on a treadmill what her secret to health and longevity was. Her response was simple yet profound

:

“When you walk with God, you have purpose, so you live longer. And when you have peace with God, you live better.”

Imagine if everything the church gives you (peace, purpose, belonging, comfort, hope, joy) came in a pill. How valuable would it be? How quickly would people line up to take it? And, who would need to force anyone to receive something designed to make their life richer?

A PLACE THAT CHANGES YOUR LIFE

Church is not about obligation; it is about invitation. It is an opportunity to grow, to connect, and to experience God in ways that reshape your everyday life. Every time you gather with God’s people, you position yourself to receive strength that carries you through the week.

If David could speak today, he would say the same thing: One day in God’s house does more for your heart than a thousand days anywhere else. So, when Sunday comes, go—not out of duty, but out of desire. Go for your soul, your peace, your growth, and your future. Church is good for you. More than you may even realise.
Amen.
