DO NOT WAIT FOR TROUBLE TO COME

Proverbs 1:27–29: “When terror strikes you like a storm and your calamity comes like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you.” (ESV)

Imagine watching someone walk towards danger while ignoring every warning you give. You try to help, explain the risks, and point the person towards safety, but your advice falls on deaf ears. Then, when disaster strikes, the person desperately looks for help. How painful it must be to watch someone suffer the very consequences they could have avoided!

Sadly, we sometimes behave the same way in our relationship with God. He gives us wisdom through His Word, speaks to our hearts, and uses people to offer us godly counsel. Yet, instead of listening, we insist on doing things our own way. We ignore the warning signs, make unwise decisions, and assume everything will work out. It is often only when the consequences catch up with us that we begin to cry out to God for help.

But why wait until trouble comes before we seek God’s wisdom?

The message of Proverbs 1:27–29 is a serious reminder that rejecting wisdom can lead to painful consequences. The passage warns against repeatedly ignoring God’s instruction and choosing to live without reverence for Him. It encourages us to recognise the value of wisdom before we find ourselves overwhelmed by circumstances.

God’s wisdom is not intended to restrict our lives; it helps us make better decisions, recognise danger, and avoid unnecessary suffering. For example, seeking wise financial advice before taking on debt may prevent years of financial pressure. Addressing a disagreement with patience may prevent a relationship from breaking down. Taking proper care of our health may help us avoid complications that could have been prevented.

In the same way, listening to God’s Word and applying its wisdom can help us make sound choices in our daily lives.

Think about it: Why wait until you are drowning before you learn how to swim? Why wait until a problem becomes overwhelming before you take steps to address it? Prevention is often better than cure and taking wise precautions can save us from unnecessary pain.

More importantly, we must develop our relationship with God before life’s storms arrive. When we spend time in His Word, pray, and learn to recognise the wisdom He provides, we become better prepared to face difficult situations. We learn to respond with faith rather than panic, patience rather than anger, and wisdom rather than desperation.

This does not mean every hardship is the result of disobedience or that God refuses to help us when we make mistakes. God is loving, merciful, and compassionate. When we stumble, we can turn to Him, receive His forgiveness, and seek His help. However, His mercy should never become an excuse to ignore His wisdom. Instead, His love should inspire us to trust Him and follow His guidance.

So, take a moment to examine your life. Is there something God has been showing you that you have been putting off? Is there a wise decision you already know you need to make? Perhaps it is time to forgive someone, change an unhealthy habit, seek godly counsel, or take responsibility for an issue you have been avoiding.

Do not assume you will always have an easier opportunity to make the right decision later. The best time to act on wisdom is when you recognise it.

My encouragement to you today is simple: do not wait for trouble to teach you the value of wisdom. Seek God now, listen to His Word, and put His wisdom into practice while you have the opportunity.

You may not be able to prevent every storm in life, but you can prepare yourself to face it wisely. Build your relationship with God in peaceful times, trust His guidance in your everyday decisions, and remain willing to learn.

May God give us hearts that love wisdom, ears that are willing to listen, and the courage to act on His guidance before trouble comes. In Jesus’ name,
Amen!
