HOW CAN YOU TURN BACK?

Galatians 4:8–9: “Formerly, when you did not know God, you were enslaved to those that by nature are not gods.

But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and worthless elementary principles of the world, whose slaves you want to be once more?”

Knowledge can shape the direction of our lives. The truth can set us free, while believing a lie can lead us into bondage. But one of the greatest tragedies is not simply living in ignorance; it is discovering the truth and then turning away from it.

Before the Galatian believers came to know Christ, they were influenced by beliefs and practices that could not give them true freedom or bring them into a relationship with the living God. But everything changed when they received the Gospel. They came to know the one true God and discovered the wonderful truth that they were also known by Him.

Paul’s question was both challenging and deeply personal: “How can you turn back?” Having experienced the freedom that comes through Christ, why would anyone willingly return to the very things that once kept them in bondage?

This question remains relevant to us today. We may have left behind our old beliefs, sinful habits, destructive relationships, and worldly ways of thinking. Yet, when life becomes difficult, we can be tempted to return to familiar patterns that once controlled us. Sometimes, the past looks attractive simply because it is familiar, even when it cannot give us the peace and freedom we need.

Beloved, do not confuse familiarity with what is good for you. Something does not become right simply because you have practised it for years. Nor does a way of life become beneficial because everyone around you follows it. We must learn to recognise the difference between what the world promotes and what God teaches us through Christ.

In Christ, we have received a new understanding of who God is and who we are in Him. We no longer need to be controlled by selfish desires, fear, hatred, bitterness, or the pressure to follow the crowd. Instead, we can live from our relationship with God, allowing His truth and love to shape our thoughts, choices, and actions.

This does not mean that we will never face temptation or struggle with old habits. It means we do not have to surrender to them. When you feel drawn towards your old ways, remember what you have received in Christ. Turn to God, renew your mind with His Word, and take the next step in the direction of truth.

Today, ask yourself: “Am I moving forward in the truth I have received, or am I returning to something God has helped me leave behind?”

Do not exchange the freedom you have found in Christ for anything that will draw you away from Him. You have come to know the living God, and He knows you. Treasure that relationship, stand firm in His truth, and keep moving forward. You have come too far in Christ to willingly return to what once held you captive.
Amen.
