Hebrews 11:1 “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen”.
PUTTING FAITH INTO PRACTICE:
Faith is much more than agreeing that God exists. It is a living, active trust that shapes the way we think, speak, and live each day. Following Jesus means learning to depend on Him even when we cannot see the entire path ahead. Faith is not wishful thinking—it is confidence in the character and promises of a faithful God.
The Bible reminds us, “Without faith it is impossible to please God” (Hebrews 11:6). At the same time, Ephesians 2:8 teaches that we are saved by God’s grace through faith, and even that faith is His gracious gift to us. These verses remind us that our confidence should never rest in the strength of our own faith but in the greatness of the One in whom we place our faith. God alone is our Creator, our Saviour, and our Sustainer. We may not understand every circumstance we face, but we can confidently know the One who holds all wisdom and all power.
Living by faith is not always easy. There are seasons when prayers seem unanswered, circumstances remain unchanged, and the future appears uncertain. During those moments, our natural tendency is to rely on what we can see, feel, or control. Yet faith calls us to look beyond our circumstances and fix our eyes on God’s unchanging character.
Hebrews 11:1 beautifully defines faith as “confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” At first glance, this may seem contradictory. How can we be certain about something we cannot see? The answer is found in the reliability of God. Faith is not confidence without evidence; it is confidence based on the trustworthy nature of the One who has spoken. Because God is faithful, His promises are dependable, even when their fulfilment has not yet appeared.
Consider creation itself. None of us witnessed God speaking the universe into existence, yet we trust His Word because He has revealed Himself as the eternal Creator. Likewise, Jesus promised eternal life to all who believe in Him. Although we have not yet experienced the fullness of that promise, we live with joyful anticipation because His Word never fails.
Throughout Hebrews 11, we meet men and women who trusted God despite uncertainty. They obeyed when the destination was unknown, persevered through hardship, and waited patiently for promises that sometimes extended beyond their own lifetime. Their lives remind us that genuine faith is not measured by immediate results but by steadfast trust in God’s faithfulness.
The same invitation is extended to us today. Every challenge we encounter becomes an opportunity to deepen our trust in God. Faith is choosing to believe that God is working even when we cannot yet see the outcome. It is continuing to pray when answers seem delayed, continuing to obey when the road is difficult, and continuing to hope because God’s promises remain secure.
Take a few moments today to examine your own heart. Is your confidence anchored in changing circumstances, or is it firmly rooted in God’s unchanging character? Ask the Holy Spirit to strengthen your faith and help you trust God’s promises with greater confidence. Spend time reflecting on the inspiring examples found in Hebrews 11, allowing their stories to encourage you to walk faithfully with Christ.
As you continue your journey of faith, remember this simple truth: faith does not ignore reality; it looks beyond present circumstances to the greater reality of God’s faithfulness. When you place your trust in Him, you can move forward with hope, peace, and confidence, knowing that the God who has promised is always faithful to fulfil His Word.
