Hebrews 11:8-10 “For he was looking forward to the city with firm foundations, whose architect and builder is God.” (NET)
Just as a plant needs water to remain alive, the human soul needs hope to keep looking towards the future. When hope fades, life can begin to feel empty, and even the simplest challenges can seem overwhelming. Hope gives us something to look forward to, a reason to keep moving, and the courage to believe that our present circumstances do not have to determine our future.
When God gives us a promise, that promise can become a source of hope. Although we may not see its fulfilment immediately, we can keep on trusting Him while we wait. Hope is the confident expectation that what we are looking forward to is still possible, even when our present circumstances seem to suggest otherwise.
Consider a child whose father promises to bring home a special gift. The child eagerly anticipates his father’s return because he believes that his father will keep his word. The gift has not yet arrived, but the promise gives the child something to look forward to. Similarly, our confidence in God’s faithfulness can sustain us while we wait for His promises to unfold.
Abraham understood what it meant to live with hope. When God called him to leave his familiar surroundings and journey to an unknown destination, Abraham obeyed by faith. He did not have every detail of the journey mapped out, nor did he immediately possess everything God had promised him. Yet he kept moving forward because he trusted the One who had called him.
Abraham lived in tents as a foreigner, looking beyond his temporary circumstances towards something greater. Hebrews 11:10 tells us that he was looking forward to a city whose foundations, architect, and builder were God Himself. His hope was not based on what he could see around him; it was anchored in the God he trusted.
Beloved, what hope are you holding on to today? Perhaps you dream of advancing in your education, but financial difficulties seem to stand in your way. You are trusting God for healing, praying for a loved one, believing for a better future, or longing to see a difficult season come to an end. You have waited so long that you have begun to wonder whether things will ever change.
Do not allow the length of your waiting to convince you that your hope is worthless. When challenges arise, remind yourself of what God has said in His Word. Pray honestly about your struggles, take the practical steps available to you, and seek wisdom and support when you need them. Faith does not mean pretending that difficulties do not exist; it means refusing to let those difficulties have the final word over your life.
Remember, too, that trusting God does not mean knowing exactly when or how everything will happen. Sometimes, the journey unfolds differently from what we expected. Nevertheless, we can continue to trust God’s character, draw strength from His Word, and remain open to His direction.
Protect your hope from discouragement, fear, and the temptation to give up. Feed it with God’s Word, strengthen it through prayer, and nurture it with daily acts of faith. Do not measure your future solely by what you are experiencing today.
Abraham kept looking towards what God had prepared, even while he lived in temporary circumstances. Let his example encourage you to look beyond your present difficulties and keep walking by faith.
Whatever you are trusting God for, do not let disappointment rob you of the courage to believe, pray, and move forward. Your circumstances may be difficult, your answers may seem delayed, and your journey may be uncertain, but you can still find strength in God’s faithfulness.
Protect that hope! Keep your eyes on God, remain faithful in the present, and never allow today’s difficulties to steal your expectation of a better tomorrow.
Amen.
