LIGHT OR DARKNESS?

1 John 1:5–6   “This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all…If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth”

Light reveals what darkness hides. It gives direction when we don’t know where to go, helps us see clearly, and brings safety and confidence. This is why the opening of creation began with God’s command, “Let there be light” (Genesis 1:3). Light was necessary for the world to flourish.

Similarly, God’s light is essential to our spiritual lives. When John tells us God is light, he is showing us something about God’s character. He is completely true, pure, loving, good, and trustworthy. To walk with Him is therefore to allow His character and truth to influence the way we live.

Darkness, by contrast, represents a life lived away from God’s truth. It can appear through dishonesty, bitterness, impurity, selfishness, fear, or choices that we know are not pleasing to Him. Darkness does not always announce itself loudly. Sometimes it enters gradually through attitudes we tolerate, habits we excuse, or areas of our lives we prefer not to examine.

That is why we need moments of honest reflection. We can become so familiar with certain behaviours that we stop noticing how they affect our relationship with God and other people. Spending time in God’s presence allows His light to expose what needs to change; not to condemn us, but to restore us and lead us into freedom.

Walking in the light does not mean pretending that we never struggle. It means refusing to hide our struggles from God. When we recognise something that is wrong, we can bring it honestly before Him, receive His grace, and allow Him to help us move forward. His light gives us the courage to face what is wrong and the strength to choose what is right.

Walking in the light also changes the way we treat people. We become more willing to speak truthfully, forgive freely, love sincerely, reject selfishness, and make choices that reflect Christ. The closer we walk with God, the more His light should become visible through our words, attitudes, decisions, and actions.

We should therefore ask ourselves from time to time: Is there any area of my life that I am keeping in the dark? Are my private choices consistent with my faith? Am I allowing fear, resentment, dishonesty, or selfish desires to control me? These questions are not meant to produce guilt; they help us remain spiritually awake and responsive to God.

The world already has enough darkness. As followers of Christ, we are called to bring something different. We can carry hope where there is despair, truth where there is confusion, love where there is hatred, and peace where there is turmoil.

Do not hide from God’s light. Walk in it, live by it, and let it shine through you. The more fully we allow God’s light to fill our lives, the more clearly others can see His goodness through us. So, where are you walking today; in the light or in the darkness?
Amen.
