LIVING BY THE SPIRIT: THAT IS THE KEY!

Galatians 5:16: “But I say, live by the Spirit and you will not carry out the desires of the flesh. For the flesh has desires that are opposed to the Spirit, and the Spirit has desires that are opposed to the flesh, for these are in opposition to each other, so that you cannot do what you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.”

THE SECRET TO A VICTORIOUS CHRISTIAN LIFE

Every successful journey requires the right guidance. A student who wants to excel must pay attention to the teacher’s instructions. Similarly, a police officer must understand and follow the principles that govern the profession. In the same way, anyone who desires to live a victorious Christian life must learn to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit.

Living by the Spirit is the key to overcoming the desires of the flesh and growing into the person God wants us to become.

The Bible teaches that our flesh and the Holy Spirit have opposing desires. The flesh pulls us towards things such as sexual immorality, impurity, anger, jealousy, selfishness and other behaviours that do not please God. The Holy Spirit, however, leads us towards love, patience, kindness, self-control and a life that reflects the character of Jesus.

This means we cannot overcome every temptation simply by relying on our own strength, determination or willpower. We need the Holy Spirit’s help daily. He lives within every believer and is our constant companion, helper and guide. He gives us the strength to say no to wrong desires and the wisdom to make decisions that honour God.

So, what does it mean to live by the Spirit? It means developing a close relationship with Him, paying attention to His guidance and allowing Him to influence our thoughts, words, decisions and actions. It also means being willing to obey His promptings, even when they challenge our feelings or personal preferences.

How do we become more sensitive to His leading? First, we must receive Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour and become children of God. The Holy Spirit then comes to dwell within us. Secondly, we must develop a consistent lifestyle of prayer, worship and studying God’s Word. These help us become more familiar with God’s character and more sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s direction.

We must also learn to make room for Him in our everyday activities. Before making important decisions, ask for His wisdom. When you feel tempted to react angrily, allow Him to produce patience in you. When you face uncertainty, seek His direction rather than rushing into decisions. When you feel weak, depend on His strength.

Remember, the Holy Spirit is not Someone we turn to only when we are in trouble. He wants to be involved in every area of our lives. He is our ever-present Helper, guiding us into truth, strengthening us in difficult moments and helping us become more like Christ.

I want to encourage you today: You do not have to fight life’s battles in your own strength. God has given you the Holy Spirit to help you live the Christian life. Make Him your daily companion. Listen to His guidance, trust His wisdom and follow His leading.

The more you learn to depend on the Holy Spirit, the more you will experience His transforming power in your daily life. Living by the Spirit is not just a Christian principle; it is the key to a victorious and fruitful Christian life. Make it your daily lifestyle!
Amen.
