Jonah 2:7–9 “When my life was ebbing away, I called out to the LORD, and my prayer came to your holy temple… But as for me, I promise to offer a sacrifice to you with a public declaration of praise.”
There are moments when our circumstances challenge what we believe. In such moments, we have a choice: we can allow our difficulties to silence us, or we can remember who God is and openly declare our trust in Him.
Jonah found himself in an extraordinary situation. God had given him an assignment, but Jonah ran in the opposite direction. His disobedience eventually led him into the sea, where God provided a great fish to swallow him. From a human perspective, being inside a fish was hardly the kind of rescue anyone would have wanted. Yet Jonah recognised something important: the very thing that looked frightening had become part of God’s way of preserving his life.
While inside the fish, Jonah prayed. He remembered the Lord, acknowledged His mercy, and made a decision: “But as for me…” He chose to worship God. His circumstances had not yet completely changed, but his heart had changed. He moved from fear to faith, from desperation to gratitude, and from simply wanting rescue to wanting to honour the One who had rescued him.
This is a powerful lesson for us. Sometimes we expect deliverance to come in a comfortable form. But God’s answer may sometimes lead us through an uncomfortable season before bringing us into a better place. We may not understand everything happening around us, but we can still trust the One who sees the whole picture.
Perhaps you are going through a difficult season today. You may be asking, “Why am I here?” or “When will this situation change?” While you wait, do not forget what God has already done. Remember the dangers He brought you through, the doors He opened, the strength He gave you, and the times He sustained you when you did not know how you would make it.
Praise is not pretending that everything is perfect. Praise is recognising that God remains worthy even when life is not perfect.
Jonah decided that his response would be different from those who had placed their confidence in worthless idols. He said, in effect, “But as for me, I will praise God.” That is a powerful personal declaration. We cannot control what everyone else chooses, but we can decide whom we will honour with our lives.
Our faith should not be something we hide around people who believe differently. We can live with humility, kindness, integrity, and courage while openly acknowledging our relationship with Jesus. Our public declaration is not merely what we say with our mouths; it is also reflected in how we treat people, how we respond to pressure, how we handle difficulties, and how faithfully we live.
Beloved, remember where God has brought you from. Remember the times He protected you, strengthened you, redirected you, and kept you when circumstances could have turned out very differently.
Therefore, let our hearts make the same declaration as Jonah: “But as for me, I will praise the Lord.”
When others complain, we can give thanks. When others lose hope, we can continue to trust. When circumstances are uncomfortable, we can remember God’s faithfulness. And when He brings us through, we will not remain silent. Our lives are a testimony, and our praise is our public declaration that God is worthy of our honour.
